The Impacts Of Automatic Speech Recognition On The Cognitive Processing Routes Of Interpreters In Consecutive Interpreting

Automatic speech recognition is seeing a rapid development nowadays,it has been applied in many occasions.Automatic speech recognition is instrumental to interpreters,if capable of prompting interpreters to choose the shortest cognitive processing route and releasing their cognitive load when they interpret culture-specific items,which are always seen as the difficulties to surmount in interpreting.Predicated on Effort Models and Processing Economy Hypothesis,this thesis seeks to probe into these questions: when interpreters translate culture-specific items,with the assistance of automatic speech recognition,what kind of rendering strategies will they choose? Which processing cognitive routes will they apply? Will they more frequently apply memory-pairing with the help of ASR?The materials used in this experiment center on politics,the first material is about CIIE containing 46 culture-specific items,including 29 proper nouns and 17 common expressions,the second material is about the Belt and Road Initiative containing 50 culture-specific items,including 30 proper nouns and 20 common expressions.The speech recognition process of the first material is made into a video.The second material is an audio.The experiment subjects are 15 second-year postgraduate students,they are required to conduct experiments.They should interpret these two passages.After that,they need to fill in the questionnaire to facilitate the affirmation of rendering strategies.Through experiments and analyses,conclusions can be made: when interpreters translate proper nouns in consecutive interpreting,with the help of automatic speech recognition,they would use more “memory-pairing”---the most economical processing route,less “conceptual-meditation”---the most costly processing route.There is no significant difference as to the influence of ASR on interpreter’s appliance of structure-routed transfer.With respect to common expressions,the assistance of ASR yields more “conceptual-meditation”,no significant difference is there as to the impact of ASR on the appliance of “memory-pairing” and “structure-routed transfer”.In sum,ASR can reduce interpreters’ cognitive load when they interpret culture-specific proper nouns,For culture-specific common expressions,ASR will increase interpreters’ cognitive load,but improve the translation quality in a comprehensive view.
