John Williams(John Williams,1922-1994),is a famous contemporary American writer, editor and professor.Stoner is his third novel, which was published in 1965.Influenced by the historical background and literary trend, though some famous critics and writers have expressed their admiration,it has not gained popularity from the reader, not until 2013 was the novel republished, forming a publishing phenomenon. The novel tells of Stoner’s failed but meaningful life.Stoner, who is born in a poor peasant family and has never been successful in the secular sense,is undoubtedly unfortunate. However,in a sense,he is very lucky. He has devoted himself to academic research and learned the secrets of history from research. In his teaching career,he has gained respect from students and colleagues. He also has the love of soul and flesh, which is fleeting but lasting.Applying Alfred Adler’s individual psychology, this thesis mainly analyzes the inferiority of the protagonist Stoner. The thesis is composed of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces Williams’ life, the main plot of Stoner, the development of individual psychology and its theoretical branches, and summarizes the current research status of Stoner at home and abroad. The main part of the thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the non-aggressive personality characteristics shown by Stoner under the influence of inferiority, including seclusiveness, anxiety and over-sensitivity.The second chapter deeply explores how the original memory, social background, family growth environment, economic factors, and personal inner conflicts and struggles affect the growth of inferiority in Stoner’s life. The third chapter summarizes how Stoner overcomes inferiority in the face of the heavy blows of life and the injustice of fate,re-establishes contact with society and others, and realizes his life value. The conclusion part summarizes the full text.Although Stoner is deeply troubled by inferiority,he has never given up on establishing contact with society. After many attempts,he achieved reconciliation with his inferiority. This thesis aims at showing that inferiority is universal. In the face of inferiority, people will compensate in different ways.Only when people recognize and accurately position themselves, establish their own life direction and goals;actively establish connection with others, grasp the opportunity of love, and realize the liberation of the soul in love;bravely face inferiority, under the guidance of the correct values, cultivate social interest, understand the true meaning of dedication and cooperation, and actively participate in society can people overcome inferiority. On this basis, this thesis is expected to enlighten the contemporary people who are troubled by inferiority to understand themselves and get out of the predicament and confusion.
