2020 is a very special year in China and even in the world.The invasion of COVID-19 has disrupted English learning and teaching.During the period of COVID-19,whether in the English online classroom or in the offline class after school resumption,students showed a certain degree of anxiety in English learning,resulting in poor English learning effect.This paper mainly explores the English learning anxiety of high school students,in middle school in Haidian District,Beijing,in the early stage of the COVID-19 epidemic(March 2020 to June 2020)and the later stage of the COVID-19 epidemic(September 2020 to January 2021).The causes of English learning anxiety in senior high school students are analyzed and solutions are sought.Under the guidance of the affective requirements proposed in the New Curriculum Standards and Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis,this thesis draws lessons from Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale,adopts the methods of questionnaire and interview,and uses SPSS22.0 to analyze data.The main research problems of this research following.1.What are the causes of student’s English learning anxiety in the senior high school during COVID-19 epidemic?2.In the influence of COVID-19 epidemic,what solutions should be suggested to deal with the English learning anxiety of senior high school freshman?The research found that the overall English learning anxiety of senior high school freshman during the period of COVID-19 epidemic belongs to low level.High school freshman have the highest level of test anxiety,followed by negative evaluation anxiety,and the lowest level of communication anxiety.In addition,the study also found that there is a strong positive correlation between student’s anxiety of COVID-19 epidemic and English learning anxiety.This research found the causes of students’ English learning anxiety during COVID-19 were as follow.In the term of English teaching,including English teaching form and pace,way of communication between teacher and students,English test form and frequency,teacher’s feedback and evaluation.In addition,students’ participation in the English classroom,the weakening of English learning motivation,and the decline in interest in learning English also affect their English learning anxiety to different extent.On the basis of the policy documents of the Ministry of Education and Beijing Education Commission,this study draws the following solutions.Relevant education departments should provide network support and English learning resources.Schools should adhere to the principle of "one school,one policy",strengthen the contact between parents and school,and conduct psychological counseling for students in time.In addition,teachers should strengthen the skills of online teaching,and reasonably plan and adjust the content and form of English courses.In the English online class,teachers should carry out multi-channel communication between teachers and students,change the way of English testing and evaluation,and give students positive feedback and evaluation;in the English offline class after the resumption of school,teachers should do a good job in English teaching cohesion,increase English review class,organize English learning help groups.In addition,the high school freshman should enhance their self-learning ability during COVID-19 epidemic,improve their sense of self-efficacy,increase their participation in English class,promote the motivation,attention and interest in English learning,so as to alleviate the anxiety of English learning during COVID-19 epidemic.
