| Saul Bellow is one of the most powerful writers in contemporary American literature. His writing career spans most of the 20th century and continues into the 21st century. In the nearly 60 years of his writing career,he has transformed from a poor Jewish immigrant son to a Nobel Prize winner in literature. However,no matter how his identity changes,he has never stopped exploring his own life and soul, examining the American society in which he lives, and showing concern for the anguish and contradictions of human existence.Taking "the other" as the entry point, this paper takes Bellow’s novels as the research object, selects the images with distinct characteristics of "the other" and "the other" to analyze, thus reflecting on the author himself and the related social and cultural information, and revealing the social and political significance of Bellow’s novels. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the paper is divided into three chapters. The introduction part briefly introduces Bellow’s creation, points out the research status of his novels at home and abroad, the research focus, ideas and innovation of this paper, and defines the "other" and related concepts in the paper. The first chapter analyzes Bellow’s images of China and Chinese,Africa and African, and African American respectively from the perspective of racial otherness by means of close reading. It reveals the collective unconsciousness of the western society behind the text of the novel and the changes of the images under the influence of the historical context. The second chapter, from the perspective of gender otherness, divides the series of female images in Bellow’s works into two categories:"submissive" and"destructive",and analyzes their "otherness" situation according to their different attitudes towards male heroes and their influences on them.At the same time, combining with Bellow’s own failed marriage to analyze his ingrained misogyny tendency. The third chapter discusses the motivation and significance of Bellow’s creation of the image of "the other".First of all, under the influence of different cultural contexts and ideological factors, the self will inject its own subjective ideas into the other intentionally or unintentionally when it speaks "the other" in an imaginative way,so as to speak "the self" with the image of "the other" as the carrier.Secondly,Bellow intends to construct his identity as a writer in the mainstream society of the United States,so he has to draw close to the mainstream ideology of the United States and create with the western value system. Finally,as a writer with a higher pursuit,Bellow revealed the malpractice of society and voiced his own voice. He no longer blindly sang praises for the country, which undoubtedly reflected the conscience of intellectuals. The conclusion summarizes the viewpoints of the thesis, and reveals the enlightenment significance of the image building of "the other" to China today. |
