| CWT(Continuation Writing Task)is a new test type for CEE(College Entrance Examination)that combines content creation and language imitation.This test type is of great significance in testing and enhancing the core literacy of students in English subjects.Therefore,Shandong Province formally added this new test type to English in the reformation of CEE in 2017.And this made CWT become one of the focuses in English teaching.At the same time,the promotion of writing competence and the cultivation of critical thinking of students were also stressed in English teaching.Therefore,carrying out CWT teaching and improving students’ critical thinking for teachers in high school have become great challenges.In the meantime,Wen Qiufang put forward an initiative teaching mode which can exert greatly on cultivating students’ productive skills.And a large number of empirical studies proved that this mode has a positive effect on college English teaching.However,in high school English teaching,especially in CWT teaching,it is rarely adopted.Under such circumstances,this empirical study applied POA in CWT teaching,aiming to investigate the following two questions:(1)What are the POA’ s effects on senior high school students’ CWT writing competence?(2)What are the POA’ s effects on senior high school students’ critical thinking in CWT teaching?This research took 80 students from two classes in Grade Two of the University Town Experimental Senior High School in Jinan City,Shandong Province as the research objects,and carried out a 14-week teaching experiment.The two classes were chosen randomly to serve as experimental class(EC)and control class(CC),one class(EC)taught in POA mode,with the other(CC)traditional one.And this research mainly adopted questionnaires and writing tests to test the relevant aspects of students.After the data collection and analysis,the main findings are as follows:Firstly,POA can improve students’ writing competence in continuation writing task(CWT)to a certain extent.It is mainly manifested in the two aspects.First,this mode can improve students’ overall CWT performance.Second,according to the analysis of the students’ works,they have made corresponding progress in specific language,content,and text structure.Secondly,the POA has a positive impact on students’ critical thinking.On the one hand,it can improve their critical thinking in various dimensions,such as analysis,evaluation,inference,induction,etc.on the other hand,certain dimensions of students’ thinking tendencies,such as openmindedness,systematization,curiosity,and cognitive maturity,have also been improved.According to this research,the author puts forward some teaching suggestions,points out the limitations of the research,and provides some enlightening ideas for future research directions. |
