Studies on stance have been a hot topic in the field of linguistics in recent years.Scholars at home and abroad have carried out researches mostly focusing on the stance-taking in written discourse. The rise of debate talk show has greatly influenced people’s life. But at present, most researches are based on journalism and communication.Linguistic studies, especially from the point of stance, are scarce. With Let’s Talk and The Debaters as its material, this research explored debaters’ language by combining the qualitative and quantitative research method.Under the guidance of stance-taking theory, the study analyzed how Chinese and English debaters achieve stance-taking and summarized differences and similarities of their patterns to further find out the reasons.Based on the investigation of debaters’language, the findings are as follows:First and foremost,as the basis and means for the stance expression of Chinese and English debaters, stance markers directly affect the debaters’stance-taking models.Secondly, both Chinese and English debaters employ four types of stance-taking,that is,epistemic stance, evaluative stance, affective stance and style stance.Nevertheless, only Chinese debaters use reinforcement markers while English debaters use affective stance markers and hedging markers more frequently.Thirdly, both Chinese and English debaters adopt three kinds of stance-taking models, referring to single pattern, dual pattern, triplex pattern, and dual pattern is the most commonly used.In addition,English debaters tend to achieve stance-taking from the affective stance.Last but not least, due to program features, debate request and cultural differences, there are both differences and similarities in the stance-taking models of Chinese and English debaters. Therefore, speakers in daily conversation or debate should clarify their purposes and then use appropriate stance-taking models based on the context,so as to effectively express their own stances. This study is expected to provide effective language instructions for people’s daily communication or debate training.
