Throughout the history of printmaking,in the era of "copy printmaking",printmaking existed dependent on printing.The "advanced nature" of printing technology determines the influence of different types of plates,that is,the practicality of types of plates is used as an important basis for its wide use.As the oldest type of printmaking,woodcut have been ups and downs,but they have always played an important role in the field of image reproduction.With the innovation of etching techniques,lithographs,etc.,woodcut were once greatly impacted and were on the verge of being eliminated.In the 18th century,the emergence of Thomas Bewick's creative Wood Engraving technique revolutionized woodcut technology,saved woodcut,and made woodcut revived.In the 19th century,lithography was widely used,and it seemed that when it replaced woodcut printing as the main printing form of book illustrations,Gustav Doré developed the technique of Wood Engraving to a new level,reproducing the art of woodcut,which can be described as woodcut technique.The pinnacle,and influenced later generations creating prints of Wood Engraving.After the printmaking has moved from "copying" to "creation",the dependence of printmaking on printing has been greatly reduced,and it has got rid of its copying function,and has only been used as a means of artistic expression.Wood Engraving,which takes "technology" as its main advantage,was eliminated by "printing" and became a "niche" version of printmaking.It was not until contemporary times that the artistry of Wood Engraving was recognized by Western academic circles and attracted more and more woodcut print artists' attention.Currently in China,Wood Engraving show a unique appearance in academic exhibitions,and more and more creators are beginning to use Wood Engraving for artistic creation.Based on the development status of Wood Engraving,it is very necessary to study the language of expression in depth.As a practitioner of Wood Engraving techniques,I turned my attention to the woodblock illustrator Gustave Doré,who pushed Wood Engraving skills to the pinnacle in the 19th century.I started with illustrations from "The Bible" and "Don Quixote".,Analyze the expression language of Wood Engraving.This article is divided into three parts to elaborate.First of all,it discusses the development of Wood Engraving in the 19th century and the life and artistic characteristics of Gustave Doré,and focuses on his "Bible" and "Don Quixote"illustrations.Secondly,starting with the language of swordsmanship,trace language,space language,modeling language and graphic language,it explores the expression language of Gustave Doré Wood Engraving illustrations.Finally,it expounds the inheritance and development of the language of Gustave Doré Wood Engraving illustrations in later generations.
