A Study Of Zhu Shenghao’s Translation Behavior From The Perspective Of Jung’s Archetype Theory

In the translation process,the translator’s psychology will control his translation behavior and make the translation with his personalized characteristics.Based on Zhu’s translation of Hamlet and Othello,this thesis applies Jung’s Archetype Theory to analyze Zhu Shenghao’s psychology from the perspectives of Persona,Shadow and Animus.And the thesis finds out the specific translation behavior Zhu Shenghao took under these three archetypes.This thesis consists of six chapters.The first chapter introduces the research background,literature review,research purpose,significance and the organization of the thesis.Among all of them,it pays more attention to elaborating the research status of the foreign and domestic scholars about the Archetype Theory and Zhu Shenghao.Besides,this chapter also expounds the significance of the thesis.The second chapter introduces the three main archetypes of Carl Jung’s Archetype Theory—Persona,Shadow and Animus.It demonstrates the feasibility of using these three archetypes to study Zhu Shenghao’s translation behavior.Chapter three analyzes Zhu’s "pleasing behavior" under the Persona archetype.During the translation process,Zhu Shenghao mainly pleased three groups of people,including the patrons,the readers and the audiences.In order to get the patrons’ recognition,Zhu Shenghao made sufficient preparations before translating.In the translation process,he maintained rigorous attitude and after translation he re-translated several times because of the war.To please readers,he translated the original text in vernacular in general which ensured its readability.Besides,by controlling the length of the sentences,using lively verbs and colloquial expressions,Zhu successfully shaped the characters’ distinctive images and added literary color to his translation.In order to please audiences,he employed repetition and various interjections to pursue the rhythm and performance of the translation.Then,chapter four analyzes Zhu Shenghao’s "avoiding behavior" under the Shadow archetype.It is mainly reflected on the obscurity of vulgar language,the hiding and deletion of the complicated images in the original text.Chapter five analyzes Zhu’s"creating behavior" under the Animus archetype.In the translation process,driven by the Animus archetype,Zhu showed his subjectivity—using Chinese traditional appellations and Chinese typical images in his translation which catered to the Chinese readers’ aesthetic expectation.In addition,he pursued poetic features in his translation by creating neat sentence patterns and rhymes.Finally,chapter six concludes the whole thesis and introduces the findings and limitations of the research.This thesis applies Jung’s Archetype Theory to comprehensively study Zhu Shenghao’s translation behavior.It has proved the influence of the translator’s psychology towards his translation behavior in the whole translation process.In addition,it provides a new theoretical perspective for the research of Zhu Shenghao’s translation behavior and enriches its research contents.At the same time,it widens the research scope of Jung’s Archetype Theory,further explores its modern significance and helps it find a new cultural way in the process of global culture exchanges.
