| Drug issue remains a common social problem for many countries in the world. Moreover, drug control matters a great deal to people’s well-being,social harmony as well as social stability. With the development of globalization, the fight against drugs increasingly requires international cooperation so that the joint anti-drug operations can be carried out to safeguard social stability and ensure people’s sound life. This generates a demand for the translation of such texts. The translator had the honor to participate in a translation project--the translation of Drug and Policy in America, this book explains American drug policies in different periods. This translation practice project is a book mainly characterized by policy analysis and assessment literature supported by materials covering related legal provisions, news report, law cases, etc, which are rich in styles and contents.Besides, complex linguistic structures, different texts and variable language environment are the main features of the submitted material,so it on the one hand requires the translator to grasp sentence structures so as to reproduce information in original text, and on the other hand,it demands the translator to pay close attention to the changes of language environment and styles of the source text.Hereby, the translator chooses the theory of adaption proposed by Jef.Verschueren to guide this translation project, for the core idea of this theory is that language use is the process of making choice by adapting to context and linguistic structure in a dynamic way at various levels of salience, which the translator thinks can be a good guidance for the translation practice.More specifically, this practice report has three main features. In lexical level,it adopts a number of professional terms;in syntactic level,it employs some special sentences such as long sentences, passive sentences and periodic sentences;in discourse level,it includes text types in different styles like news reports, legal provisions and law cases.Hence,in the translation process, word accuracy, sentence coherence and style keeping are the main problems waiting to be solved.Under the guidance of the Theory of Adaptation, the translator adopts literal translation, sequential translation, restructuring sentences, division of long sentences into short sentences and some other strategies to solve the problems encountered in the translation process. This translation practice makes the translator know that a translator needs to consider how to make a choice among different expressions and how to adjust sentence order according to the contextual environment in the translation to ensure the quality of the translated version. |
