A Report On E-C Translation Of Beyond Adversary Democracy(Excerpts)

With the extensive development of cross-cultural communication between China and the west,the social science researches in China have become more and more internationalized,and the translation demand is on the increase.Therefore,the discussion and researches on related social science text translation are of greater significance.This report takes the English-Chinese translation practice of Beyond Adversary Democracy as a case and the functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida as a theoretical guide,aiming to explore the techniques and methods of English-Chinese translation of social science texts.Functional equivalence theory emphasizes on the functional equivalence between the two languages rather than the word to word correspondence in form in order to achieve almost the same effect on mental experience of both the target readers and the source readers.As the social science text has its own social and cultural attributes,the functional equivalence theory plays a guiding role in the translation to explore close and natural expressions between language and culture.In translating the text Beyond Adversary Democracy,the author has discovered that the major translation difficulty of the text is the English-Chinese translation of long sentence,that is,the translation of long complex sentence,long simple sentence and long compound sentence.In this regard,under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,and based on the analysis of a large number of translation examples,the author has summarized the following translation techniques for the above three categories of long sentences: for English-Chinese translation of long complex sentence,the translation techniques such as “syntactic linearity plus”(“syntactic linearity plus” means that when the main sentence structure of English and Chinese are basically the same,the main sentence structure can be translated by syntactic linearity,on this basis,the other parts of the original sentence can be translated flexibly by translation techniques such as addition and shifting according to the sentence context),shifting,division and recasting can be adopted;for English-Chinese translation of long simple sentence and long compound sentence thetranslation technique “syntactic linearity plus” can be mainly adopted.By means of participating in the English-Chinese translation practice of Beyond Adversary Democracy,and based on the characteristics of social science text,the author has summarized several English-Chinese translation techniques for the above three kinds of long and complicated English sentences under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,hoping that this paper can provide the translators of related fields with some reference.
