In recent years,the Ministry of Education has begun to emphasize students’ core competency as an important part of discipline teaching.In 2017,the Ministry of Education formulated and promulgated the new English curriculum standards for senior middle schools,which clearly put forward the need to cultivate students’ core competency of English subject.There is no doubt that reading teaching is one of the most important ways to cultivate students’ core competency of English subject.As an important teaching method in junior English reading class,the effectiveness of classroom questioning has a direct impact on the quality of junior English reading teaching.Therefore,questioning in junior English reading class plays a key role in the cultivation of students’ core competency of English subject.This paper reviews the current research on the core competency of English subject and the effectiveness of questioning in English reading,and defines the meaning of core competency of English subject and the effectiveness of questioning in English reading in junior middle school.On this basis,this study investigates four English reading classes by four different English teachers with more than 100 students in a middle school in Mianyang,Sichuan Province,using questionnaire survey,classroom observation,case analysis and quantitative analysis.It is found that the current problems in developing the core competency of English subject in English reading class in junior middle school are the followings:(1)uneven distribution of questions;too much focus on the cultivation of students’ language ability;neglect of cultural awareness;and lack of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality and learning ability(2)monotony of questioning techniques;one aspect-aimed questions,relatively small gradient of difficulty;and patterned and stereotyped questions(3)questions that lack of student feedback and can not fully arouse the student’s enthusiasm.In view of the problems found,this paper puts forward some strategies to improvethe effectiveness of questioning in junior middle school English reading class,which can promote the cultivation of students’ core English competency.The strategies include:(1)teachers should strengthen the study of English core competency theory,strengthen the implementation of the guiding spirit of the new curriculum standard,pay attention to the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness,and strengthen the students’ thinking and learning quality;(2)In the aspect of language ability training,classroom questioning should pay attention to strengthening students’ language output ability and improving the language comprehensive difficulty of questioning;(3)in the aspect of cultural awareness training,classroom questioning should strengthen the cultivation of cultural awareness,and consciously dig out the cultural connotation of reading text,and emphasize the transmission of culture;(4)in the aspect of thinking quality training,classroom questioning should strengthen the cultivation of cultural awareness,Classroom questioning should increase the frequency of high-level thinking and enhance the difficulty gradient of thinking in questioning;(5)in terms of learning ability training,classroom questioning should pay attention to the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability.The results of the study provide a new perspective for the research of junior middle school English reading classroom questioning,and also provide some reference for the majority of junior high school English teachers to cultivate students’ English core competency in reading classroom questioning.
