A Report On C-E Translation Of Collection Of Essays Hometown In My Memory(Excerpts)

This paper is a practical report on the translation of Chinese prose.The selected translation materials are two essays in the collection of essays Hometown in My Memory: Times of Pursuing My Dream and Journey of Yellow Crane Tower.Compared with fiction and poetry,Chinese prose translation is less popular.The translator renders the above two materials to study the strategies of C-E prose translation,providing a reference for scholars who carry out related research.The original text is a narrative prose,characterized by expressive text,informative text and vocative text.Therefore,the translator chooses Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation to guide this translation practice.The original text with the description of characters feelings by means of metaphor,repetition,parallelism and other rhetorical devices is expressive text.The translator adopts semantic translation and utilizes literal translation to reproduce the original style.Qingyang dialect,idioms and cultural nouns are used to record the original author’s experience and arouse readers’ resonance,in which are informative and vocative texts.The translator adopts communicative translation to render such information.The translation methods are free translation,borrowing translation and amplification.In order to spread characteristic culture,the translator also employs the transliteration plus annotation in specific context.This report is divided into five parts: The first part is the introduction of the background and significance of this project.The second part is the description of the original author and writing style,the content and language features of the source text.The third part is the analysis of the theory of semantic translation and communicative translation and the rationality of the application of this theory.The fourth part expounds the difficulties encountered by the translator during the translation,that is,the translation of culture-loaded words,Qingyang dialect and rhetorical devices.Meantime,it describes how the translator,guided by the translation theory,adopts corresponding translation methods to deal with the above difficulties.The last part summarizes translation experience and feasible suggestions of translator.
