Abstract/Summary:
Procrastination is a widespread social phenomenon, and about half admit to procrastination. Some studies have shown that the individual’s time perspective profoundly affects people’s daily behavior and decision-making.Considering the time nature of procrastination,it is reasonable to think that procrastination may be related to individual differences in cognitive time frame or time view. From the point of view of time perception, this paper explores the behavior preference and regularity of procrastination in inter-temporal selection. In order to explore the relationship between procrastination and intertemporal selection,a questionnaire of general procrastination and intertemporal selection was issued to 201 college students to explore the relationship between procrastination and intertemporal selection, and 450 students were sent general procrastination questionnaires to study two screening subjects. In the second study, two behavioral experiments were carried out using the intertemporal selection task paradigm. In the first experiment, the procrastination subjects were divided into two kinds of individuals with different time insight through the general future time perspective questionnaire of college students, and the selection preferences and rules of the procrastination procrastinators in the inter-period selection were investigated from the macro-time perception angle. In experiment two,the procrastination individual was divided into time intervals by the time replication task.In this paper, the effects of different distance estimation level procrastination on intertemporal selection were investigated from the microscopic perspective of time perception in the overestimation and time interval estimation groups. The results showed that:(1)the higher the delay score, the higher the delay discount rate.(2)The probability of high-future time-to-time insight is significantly lower than that of the low-future time insight group, but it is significantly higher than the low-future time insight group at the time of its response;the delay time is 7 days,The probability of selecting the instant option for the participants is significantly lower than the probability of the delay one month;the probability of selecting the real-time option in the loss context is significantly higher than that of the income situation.(3)when the probability of selecting the instant option from the overvalued group is significantly higher than that of the time interval under the income situation, the probability of selecting the instant option under the loss context is significantly higher than that of the income situation, and the probability of the response is obviously lower than that of the income situation;and under the income situation,When time delay was one month, the probability of choosing immediate option was significantly higher than that of time delay of 7 days, but there was no significant difference between them in the case of loss, but the response time of one month delay was significantly longer than that of 7 days in response time.In summary, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)There was a significant positive correlation between procrastination behavior and delayed discount.Procrastination individuals preferred to choose immediate and smaller rewards in intertemporal choice.(2)Compared with the individuals with low future time insight procrastination, the delayed satisfaction ability of the individuals with high future time insight procrastination was stronger than that of the individuals with low future time insight procrastination, and the effects of delay time and experimental situation on different subjects were consistent.(3)The experimental situation can affect the intertemporal selection of individuals with delay in estimation of different time intervals. In the return situation, the overestimated time delay preferred the immediate smaller reward, while in the loss situation, the individuals who did not estimate the delay at the same time all chose the immediate smaller loss.
