Elimination Of Translationese In E-C Translation Practice

In English-Chinese translation practice,translationese can affect Chinese readers’ understanding of the translations and impede the cultural exchanges between China and the West in the long run.Therefore,translators need to adopt effective skills to eliminate translationese to make the translations natural and fluent.The report discusses the translation skills of eliminating translationese from aspects of lexicon,syntax and rhetoric based on 40 examples selected from From Silk to Silicon translation practice.At the lexical level,translationese is mainly manifested in improper collocations,thus four skills are adopted to make translations conform to Chinese idiomatic expressions,and they are addition of words,ellipsis of words,conversion of parts of speech and extension of semantic meaning.At the syntactic level,translationese is mainly manifested in lengthy and illogical sentences,thus three skills are adopted to make the sentences smooth and they are division of long sentence,adjustment of word order and conversion of voice.At the rhetorical level,translationese is mainly manifested in the vague translations of similes,thus free translation is adopted to deliver the basic meanings of the source text.Through the translation practice and theory learning,the author finds that it will be effective to eliminate translationese under the guidance of both Lian Shuneng’s Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese and Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.Specifically,under the guidance of Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese,the author deals with words and sentence constructions flexibly to produce more smooth Chinese translations,which helps eliminate translationese at the lexical level and the syntactic level.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the author translates the rhetorical sentences with the goal of achieving equivalent effects.Meanwhile,translators should improve translation abilities by strengthening language foundation,using effective translation tools,improving typesetting abilities and developing rigorous working attitude.And the report also makes a prospect for the future researches of skills of eliminating translationese based on the limitations in the number of cases and the text types.
