| This report is about the Chinese translation of Clean Air Act 1993.The Clean Air Act 1993,as an Act enacted by the British Government to prevent and control air pollution, has played a crucial role in the smog management in London. The Chinese translation of this Act can not only introduce to our country successful experience of the UK to control air pollution, but also provide guidance to our domestic environmental legislation. The logicality and authority of legal texts determine that the words and sentences are highly professional. At the lexical level, there are many archaic adverbs, modal verbs, terminologies and prepositional phrases.Passive sentences and adverbial clauses of condition are very common at the syntactic level. The typical linguistic features in the source language text have become the key issues to be dealt with in the translation. In this report, under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s “Text Type Theory”,“Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory”,the author will discuss the translation methods of the Act from both the lexical level and syntactic level. It is hoped that this report will be of some use to other translators in the future. |
