The Effect Of Self-other Overlap On Trust Repair

Trust is the cornerstone of the survival of human society.In daily life,trust is easily violated and destroyed.After the breach of trust,it may lead to retaliation,reduce cooperation and other serious consequences.Therefore,trust repair is an important topic in the field of trust.According to the bilateral model of trust repair,trust repair is a process of interaction between the trustor and the violator.Therefore,the nature of the relationship between the two parties should be taken into account in the study of trust repair.The concept of self-other overlap comprehensively and accurately generalizes the quality of interpersonal relationships.In this study,we used the repeated trust game paradigm to explore the impact of the concept of self-other overlap on trust repair.In experiment 1,60 college students were selected as subjects and a single factor in subject design was adopted.The subjects completed the tasks of self-others overlap measurement and repeated trust game for different target characters.The results showed that the degree of self-other overlap was significant.The higher the degree of overlap between subjects and target objects,the higher the level of trust-repair belief and trust-repair behavior.In experiment 2,65 college students were recruited to complete a single-factor two-level within groups design.The participants completed the self-other overlap measurement of different target objects and the trust game task based on honest trust violation.The results showed that the degree of self-other overlap was significant,and the higher the degree of self-other overlap is,under the honesty violation type,the higher the trust repair belief rating and trust repair behavior investment are.In experiment 3,70 college students were recruited as subjects and a two-factor mixed design was used to investigate the moderating role of perspective taking in the influence of self-other overlap on trust repair.The subjects were randomly assigned to the perspective taking group and the control group.The perspective taking group was asked to think from the perspective of the other party after the trust violation,while the control group was asked to think from the objective perspective after the trust violation.The results show that the main effect of perspective taking and the self-other overlap is significant,Compared with control group,the trust belief and investment of the subjects in the condition of perspective taking are significantly increased.The interaction between perspective taking and self-other overlap is not significant.Perspective taking has no moderating effect on trust repair belief and trust repair behavior in the degree of self-other overlap.Therefore,the results of the three experiments in this study indicate that the degree of self-other overlap has a significant effect on trust repair,while the effect of perspective taking on trust repair is not significant.
