in the middle and late 20 th century,American 12-tone sequence music has a great influence on the history of western music.Studying the development of American 12-tone sequence music in this period is beneficial to the study of 12-tone sequence music in China.The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the development and evolution of American 12-tone sequence music in the middle and late 20 th century.This paper takes the composers and works of 12-tone sequence music produced in different stages of American history as the context,compares the development of 12-tone sequence music in different periods in the United States,and analyzes the reasons for the different development of 12-tone sequence music in the United States by combining social and political background,cultural and ideological factors.The second one focuses on the analysis of the important composers and their works in the development process of American 12-tone sequence music in different periods,and analyzes the overall characteristics of American 12-tone sequence music from the same perspective by putting different composers’ creative methods of12-tone sequence music in order to deepen people’s existing understanding of 12-tone sequence music.This paper consists of three parts: introduction,text and conclusion,consisting of five chapters.The body part consists of three chapters.The first chapter is divided into two parts.The first part introduces the definition,basic principles and development process of 12-tone sequence music.The second part reviews the development of 12-tone sequence music in the United States before the middle and late 20 th century,which is the initial stage of American 12-tone sequence music.The second chapter discusses the prosperity and development period of American 12-tone sequence music from 1945 to 1970,which is divided into three parts.First of all,a large number of composers and works of 12-tone sequence music emerged in the United States,which promoted the diversification of 12-tone sequence techniques and the mature development of theory.The twelve-tone sequence music in the United States flourished during this period.Secondly,the author describes the music career and works of the twelve tone sequence composers Rochberg,Stravinsky and Babbitt,who are the leading figures in the music creation of twelve tone sequence.Finally,it analyzes the reasons for the prosperity of 12-tone sequence music in the United States after World War II from the aspects of the historical status quo of the United States,the group of composers and external factors.The third chapter discusses the decline of American 12-tone sequence music from 1970 to 1999.Also divided into three parts:First,describe the twelve pitches serial music composer and reduction of the works,the disadvantages of techniques,etc.,to interpretation of the twelve pitches serial music since 70 in the United States music stage marginalized status,Secondly,this paper describes the creative ideas of twelfth tone sequence music of two new American composers,Louis Talma and John Corelliano,and analyzes the cases of their works;Finally,it analyzes the reasons why 12-tone sequence music in the United States from 1970 to 1999 changed from high tide to low tide based on the current historical situation of the United States and the characteristics of 12-tone sequence.The last chapter concludes by reflecting on the change of American 12-tone sequence music from prosperity to decline from 1945 to 1999 after World War II and drawing conclusions.
