Reading plays a very important role in English learning and reading comprehension is of great importance in the College Entrance Examination,which accounts for about 33% of the total score.However,traditional reading teaching model used by teachers now is too outdated to meet the needs of students’ development,which is mainly based on teachers’ explanations,and totally ignores the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning awareness and cooperative learning awareness.What’s more,it results in not only students’ low interest and self-confidence in reading as well as negative reading attitude,but also the generally low reading achievements of students.However,English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017 version)states that English reading teaching should highlight the student’s dominant position,which can not only help students improve their interest and self-confidence in reading,but also enhance students’ cooperative learning awareness and autonomous learning awareness.And then students’ reading achievements will be raised.Therefore,this research attempts to apply reading circles teaching model proposed by scholar Harvey Daniels to English reading teaching in senior high school,mainly to discuss the following three questions:1.What influence does the application of reading circles have on improving students’ reading achievements ?2.With the help of reading circles,what changes do students have in their interest and self-confidence in reading as well as reading attitude?3.Can the application of reading circles help students enhance their cooperative learning awareness?The research selects two parallel classes of one school in Minqin as CC and EC.In the experiment,the author still adopts the traditional reading method in CC while reading circles teaching model is used in EC.The experiment combines the quantitative methods and qualitative methods together.Before and after experiment,two tests and two questionnaires are respectively implemented to the participants,and after the experiment,the author organizes an interview.And all the collected data has been analyzed scientifically.The research results show that reading circles teaching model not only has a very positive effect on improving students’ interest and self-confidence in reading,but also raise students’ reading achievements.Meanwhile,students’ cooperative learning awareness and autonomous learning awareness have also been enhanced.All in all,the reading circles teaching mode is a new reading teaching model,which mostly meets the requirements of the the new curriculum standard and the current students.Therefore,this kind of reading teaching model is worthy of being promoted and applied to a wider range of English reading teaching to help improve students’ English reading achievements and reading ability.
