| At present,most studies on COVID-19 focus on medicine and health,and most of the researches focus on medical science.The number of studies combined with linguistics is still rare.Based on the attitude resources of Martin’s appraisal theory,this paper selects 40 news reports about COVID-19 from China Daily and CNN as corpus.The UAM corpus tool 3.0 is also used to make a contrastive analysis of news discourse.This study aims to answer the following three questions: 1.What attitude resources do the COVID-19 news discourse show? 2.How are the attitude resources distributed in China Daily and CNN news discourse? 3.What are the differences and similarities between China and the United State’s attitude toward the COVID-19?The research results are: There are abundant realization of attitude resources in both China Daily and CNN,262 times in China Daily and 197 times in CNN.Among them,judgement resource is the most used,which accounting for 59.16% and 60.41% respectively.Appreciation resource is the second,accounting for 24.43% and 25.89% respectively.And affect resource ranks the least,they are shown at the rate of 16.41% and 13.71% respectively.Second,there are two similarities and four differences in the attitudes reflected in the news discourse of the two countries.Similarities: 1.Both countries hold a negative attitude towards the emergence of COVID-19,and people in both countries feel panic to varying degrees.2.Most of the negative attitude resources come from the criticism of the negative reaction of the US government and the president.Differences: 1.In China Daily,journalists think that China has the ability to control the pandemic and make the Chinese people feel safe.On the contrary,in CNN,the United States takes negative attitude towards in China’s ability and political system.2.In terms of measures of curbing the pandemic,China Daily’s reporters praise China,while CNN’s reporters seldom comment on China,mostly focusing on criticizing the measures taken by the United States.3.The Chinese editors express the commendation to China’s sense of responsibility as a great power and criticized the U.S.for its international responsibilities.CNN’s editors think China is responsible for the outbreak.To sum up,this study enriches the research perspective of CDA,and provides reference for the follow-up study of COVID-19 news discourse.Moreover,this study can guide readers to read international news critically,can also be used as a reference for the readers and English learners. |
