This is a project report on the translation of the Introduction and Chapter One of The Uncertain Future of American Public Higher Education,written by Daniel M.Johnson.Based on his previous experience,now this book is his attempt to give voice to the challenges of the American public higher education and to call for leadership to cope.The introduction gives out basic information on American public higher education.The tuition crisis of public higher education is detailed in the first chapter.This translation project aims to provide some experience for the domestic leadership of education and help them build a sustainable education.Under Reiss’ s text typology,the source text belongs to the informative text.Therefore,the translator should represent the content of the text accurately and comprehensively with explicit and plain language oriented to the target language.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,the difficulties of translation are the reproduction of accurateness and logicality.The difficulties of accurateness lie in acronyms and cultural-loaded phrases;the difficulties of logicality mean the reconstruction of the logicality and coherence of the text,including the cohesive devices and the reconstruction of long sentences.Guided by the communicative translation theory,addition,explicitation,division,and restructuring are adopted to convey the content of the source text.
