Translation is a cross-language communicative activity where translation loss is inevitable on account of huge differences between two languages and their respective culture.Georgia: An Arctic Diary is a documentary literary work, which records the author’s daily life in the Canadian Arctic. It shows the ethnic characteristics of the Inuit people and the regional features of the Arctic. The content of the book is very distinctive, but it is easy to suffer translation loss in language and culture in the process of translation.Guided by the compensation strategies proposed by Xia Tingde, this thesis studies how to compensate for translation loss,so as to reproduce the linguistic and cultural connotation of the original text to the greatest extent.According to Xia,translation compensation refers to the repair or remedy for the potential or actual loss in the translation process based on the text type and the purpose of translation, mainly by means of the target language, supplemented by other language means in accordance with the convention or standard of the target language. He puts forward six principles to regulate compensation and divides compensation into eight categories. The compensation strategies he proposes include amplification, specification, generalization, annotation, etc.Based on Xia’s theory of translation compensation, this thesis flexibly compensates for the potential linguistic and cultural losses in the translation of Georgia:An Arctic Diary by using such methods as amplification, specification, addtion of particles, annotation and etc.The practice proves that compensation is an effective means to deal with translation loss.
