Study On The Cover Design Of Children’s World Magazine

As one of the "Top Ten Magzines" of the Commercial Press in the period of the Republic of China,"Children’s World" had a long publication time and a wide range of radiation,was deeply loved by children’s readers.Its dissemination value had an incomparable position in the children’s magazines in the period of the Republic of China,and it can be called "a peak in the history of Chinese children’s newspapers".The cover design of "Children’s World" is closely followed by the background of the times.This paper takes the cover of "Children’s World" as the research object,which was published from 1922 to the end of 1941.Combined with the social and historical situation at that time,this paper carefully combs its founded background,development process,printing technology and the changes of children’s concept,and tries to reveal the font characteristics,the construction of children’s image,and the change and development of the overall artistic characteristics of the cover,hoping to make a multi angle,comprehensive and systematic research and analysis on the cover design of "Children’s World".During the May Fourth Movement,the great emancipation of the mind realized the discovery from "people" to "women" and finally to "children"."New view of children" was also widely spread in the society,and the image of children as "an old head on young shoulders" was also been improved.This paper is based on this background.Under the guidance of "new view of children",the cover design of "Children’s World" was no longer highly similar to adult publications as traditional children’s books.Instead,it makes innovations in font,color,children’s image,cover theme and so on,restoring "what childhood should have been like".No matter the children who are full of adventure spirit,who love invention and creation,or who are kind and naughty,their images were presented to the readers through the cover design of the magazine.In that turbulent era,it was not easy to create a dynamic "new child" image.The font design of its cover was different with traditional children’s magazines,showing the transformation from tradition to modern,from plane to three-dimensional,from standard to patterning,geometric drawing and abstraction,and combining with ingenious color design and creative techniques to create a real childhood appearance.It was very rare to design a magazine cover that is close to children and in line with children’s age in the period of the Republic of China.
