Abstract/Summary:
This paper chooses a series of books entitled Impression of China published by Huangshan Publishing House as its source texts. The author uses Relevance-Adaptation Model(R-A Model)to analyze the source text and study the process of the translation. This paper holds that translation is not only an ostensive inferential process for seeking relevance, but also a dynamic adaptation process. In other words, the translator seeks relevance in the cognitive context of the original author and makes dynamic adaptation in the cognitive context of the target reader. In the process of translation, the translator,as a reader and researcher, interprets the discourse of the original text and makes a dialogue with the original author, which is a communicative process of seeking relevance and making ostensive inference. The translator should give full play to his subjectivity consciousness and seek relevance by using logical information, lexical information and encyclopedic information according to the cognitive context of the original author. He should put forward a series of contextual hypotheses and appreciate the contextual effects conveyed by each contextual hypothesis, and infer the informative intention and communicative intention conveyed by the original author. In this process, the translator infers the optimal relevance hypothesis that matches the communicative intention of the original author.Translators,as a creator and negotiator, should display their subjective initiative, understand the original author’s informative intention and communicative intention, and make linguistic choices based on the optimal relevance in the reader’s cognitive context, which features on variability, negotiability and adaptability. At the same time,in the process of adaptation, the translator will take into account the physical world, social world, psychological world and linguistic context in the reader’s cognitive context,so that the communicative information of the original author can be transmitted to the reader as accurately as possible. On the other hand, from the reader’s point of view, the reader can spend less processing effort in his cognitive context to infer the communicative information conveyed by the translator and obtain the optimal relevance in the utterance,so as to understand the communicative intention conveyed by the original author. This paper consists of six parts. The first three chapters includes the introduction of the thesis, literature review and an overview of tourism texts.Chapter Four is the theoretical part of this paper. In view of the deficiencies of Relevance Theory and Adaptation Theory, the author further discusses the R-A Model proposed by the previous researchers, and establishes an improved R-A Model for this study which is applied to the tourism text translation.Chapter Five discusses the R-A Model in the translation of tourism texts from four aspects: the physical world, the social world, the mental world and the linguistic context.Chapter Six is the conclusion. This paper aims to improve the R-A Model proposed by researchers to interpret the translation process of tourism texts and improve the quality of translation of tourism materials in order to promote the effect of cultural exchange in the tourism industry.
