The Republican Era(1869-1901),authored by Leonard D.White,a prominent expert in administration science,is an academic work which is aimed at sketching and evaluating the 30 years’ administration history of American government.He attempts to give insights into the deficiencies of American political systems,expose the false masks of American politicians and attack their moral degradation in the book.there still exists some suspicion of beautifying America and its administrative system,which is not worthy affirmation and publicity.The author of the report chose chapter 9 as the source text for the translation practice report,which mainly deals with the administrative policies for tragic Indians and state-owned land.To a large extent,it is an informative text and weakly expressive with a high academic and professional style.As a whole,the report covers five sections: the introduction,the task description,the translation process,the case analysis and the conclusion.The task source and values of translation were explained in the first section.After that,the author of the report analyzed the text type of the source text and stated the requirements of the entrusting party in the section of task description.Sections three elaborated how the author did in the process of translation.The author selected Tragic Encounters: The people’s History of Americans as the parallel text and chose modes of Chesterman’s translation ethics as the guidance of translation practice.Upon completion of the translation job,self-evaluation,peer evaluation and evaluation from entrusting party were made and illustrated respectively.In section four,the author analyzed some translation difficulties and different methods were adopted to solve them based on ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication and norm-based ethics.section five was the conclusion of the report,the author pointed out some problems unsolved and offered viewpoints about translation work in the future.Through the translation practice,the author realizes that a good command of bilingual competence is essential for the translator to complete a better translation work.With the science and technology changing rapidly,translators should not only master prominent language skills,but also effortlessly use modern machine translation techniques to further improve the translation efficiency and quality.Much more than this,the cultivation of translators’ sense of service and work ethics allows no delay so that the translator’s social responsibility as a bridge for intercultural communication could be fulfilled.
