A Report On The E-C Translation Of Pakistan:A Hard Country(Chapter4)

This is an English-Chinese translation report in accordance with Pakistan: A hard Country(Chapter 4),written by Anatole Levin,a Professor of King’s College London.It is divided into four parts,twelve chapters,to introduce Pakistan from the perspective of politics,economics military and religious beliefs.The translator chooses the fourth chapter of the second part,which mainly introduces the influence of Islam on politics in Pakistan,the branches and development of Islam,with a total of more than 20000 words.In the process of translation,the translator has encountered many hardships due to the differences between English and Chinese and the non-equivalence of the culture background of China and Pakistan.Therefore,the purpose of this translation practice report is to analyze the difficulties run into in the translation process and provide corresponding translation methods.The difficulties at lexical level is to translate the proper nouns and attributive adjectives,the translator adopts the method of annotation to solve the former problem;as for attributive adjectives,semantic adaption and four-character structure are adopted;in terms of handling of dashes,the translator provides three translation methods: zero translation and conversing into other symbols or other language;there are a number of long and complex sentences in this book at the syntactic level,so the sentence restructuring is applied.The chapter selected by the translator is an introduction to the religious beliefs of Pakistanis,which is a little obscure and difficult for translator.It is helpful to improve the translation ability and skills,and contribute to a further understanding of Pakistan for translator.The translator also summarizes a lot of translation experience and methods,which lays a solid foundation for future translation.I hope it is able to offer some reference for the scholars studying Pakistan both at home and abroad if the translation can be published.
