Research Review Of Zhouwen In Shuo Wen Jie Zi

Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen refers to the Zhouwen characters right below some characters entries in the form of small seal script in Shuo Wen Jie Zi,a book writed by Xu Shen in the eastern Han Dynasty.About the origin of Zhouwen,Shuo Wen Jie Zi·Xu mentioned that “The court historian of Zhou Xuan Wang’s period,whose name was Zhou,wrote fifteen articles in the written form of big seal script,which was different from ancient writing".According to this,later scholars thought that Zhouwen originated from the Shi Zhou Pian created by famous court historian Zhou of Zhou Xuan Wang’s period,where the fonts are Zhouwen.But according to Wang Guowei,an expert in Chinese culture in the Republic of China era,Zhou was not a name.From his point of view,Zhouwen were Qin characters of Warring States Period.His opinion subverted traditional perceptions and had great influence.Since then,many scholars have commented on Wang’s statement,and have studied a series of problems of Zhouwen,and achieved fruitful results.But when Zhouwen came into being,is still inconclusive.In recent years,with more and more unearthed materials,it is necessary to solve the problems such as the source of the Zhouwen.The dissertation is to explore a series of problems in Zhouwen by selecting the text materials from Shang Dynasty to Warring States Period and to compare them with 216 Zhouwen characters retained in Xushen’s Shuo Wen Jie Zi about structures and characteristics.The key content of the article is embodied in three aspects:The first is to sort out the current situation of research,the author tries to divide research of Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen into the traditional study period and the scientific study period.At the same time,the research results are classified into five areas,including the geographical scope of use of Shi Zhou Pian and Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen,the number of Shi Zhou Pian and Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen,the relationship between Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen and ancient characters,the characteristics of Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen and other researchs.The second is to select the the text materials from Shang Dynasty Characters Glyph Table,Western Zhou Dynasty Characters Glyph Table,Spring and Autumn Period Characters Glyph Table,Warring States Period Characters Glyph Table and to compare them with 216 Zhouwen characters retained in Xushen’s Shuo Wen Jie Zi,then find out the glyphs that fit Shuo Wen Jie Zi’s Zhouwen.The third is to identify the origin and scope of use through statistical and quantitative analysis of the results.
