| Eco-translatology defines translation as the process of multi-dimensional adaptation and selection of translators to the eco-environment of translation, which focuses on the adaptive selection and transformation of linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension. The Magic Toyshop is an alternative female bildungsroman of Angela Carter. In this novel,Carter uses a great many of rhetorical devices and makes combination of proper nouns with specific cultural connotations, all of which constitute the translation difficulties of the text at linguistic, cultural and communicative levels. In this thesis, the author applies qualitative analysis to combine Yan Yun’s Chinese translation of The Magic Toyshop with the translation method of “three-dimensional” transformation in eco-translatology,exploring the application of eco-translatology in E-C novel translation. The following was found:(1)literal translation is an adaptive selection to the language form of the original text.In addition to it,the language expressions involving proper semantic supplements, part of speech and sentence pattern conversions suitable for the context of the original and target text are necessary supplements to reproduce Carter’s dark and mysterious language form;(2)For contents which are complicated to understand as a result of vocabularies of foreign characteristics, adding footnotes based upon literal translation should be seen as an appropriate adaptation.Simultaneously, special attention was paid to the overall effect of translation;(3)For the translation of opaque words without equivalents but rich in specific cultural images, the translation strategies of substitution, supplement and omission should be adopted to ensure that the communicative intention of the original can be realized in the translation. In the thesis, the translation strategies in the Chinese version of The Magic Toyshop are illustrated from the perspective of eco-translatology,and the analysis of deficiencies in translation and reasons behind the better survival of this version are conducted likewise,so as to provide reference for other translators’ research in related fields and promote the communication between different languages and cultures. |
