The National English Curriculum Standard(2018)clearly states that the high school English curriculum aims to cultivate the key competence of students: language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality, and learning ability.Among them, thinking quality is a key one, which embodies the mental characteristics of the students. In English teaching, reading is not only a way for students to input information, but also a basis for students to conduct in-depth thinking.Teachers can guide students to think about the text by setting different types of questions in the reading class,so that students can deepen the ability of analysis, appreciation and judgment of the article. Finally, their thinking quality can be developed.During the internship in Dayi Middle School in Sichuan Province, the author selected 5 English teachers and 160 students in the first grade to investigate the questions set by the teachers in English reading class. The investigation is divided into three parts.First, the author conducted 1vs1 interviews with these five English teachers, asking them about their question setting in the reading class;then the author observed and recorded the questions set by the five teachers in the reading class;finally,160 questionnaires about the teacher’s question setting in the reading class were given off to these students.Through 1vs1 interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and questionnaires, the author discovered the problems of teachers’ question setting in the reading class. Then the author analyzed the reasons for and put forward reasonable suggestions. The research questions of this article are:1.What kind of questions are set by teachers in English reading class? What are the proportion of the questions set by teachers in English reading class ? Which cognitive levels do these questions correspond to?2.Do the questions set by teachers in the English reading class of senior high schools have the effect of cultivating students’ thinking quality? If so,in what aspects?3.What are the factors that influence the question setting of teachers in reading teaching?Based on the collected data, the author has mainly formed the following research results:1.In English reading class, the teachers ask display questions, referential questions and evaluative questions.Generally, the proportion of questions raised by teachers in English reading class does not reach the standard, mainly because there are too many display questions, lack of referential questions and evaluative questions. These questions correspond to the cognitive levels of remembering, understanding, applying, and evaluating.2.The questions set by teachers in the high school English reading class have played a role in cultivating students’ thinking qualities. However, the cultivation of low-level thinking qualities are involved more and high-level thinking qualities are less cultivated. It is mainly reflected in the cultivation of students’ logical thinking, while the cultivation of critical thinking and innovative thinking is relatively less.3.The main factors that affect teacher’s question setting in English reading teaching are:teachers are lack of the awareness of question setting;teachers are lack of professional training and guidance. On the basis of the above research results, this paper puts forward suggestions for teachers to set questions based on cultivating students’ thinking quality in English reading class, hoping to provide new power for cultivating students’ thinking quality and improving students’ key competence. And this paper also hope to provide enlightenment and reference for the later research. |
