This article studies the form and concept of Dunhuang landscape paintings.Dunhuang landscape painting is an important and marginal existence in the history of ancient Chinese painting.It is isolated from the history of mainstream Chinese landscape painting,but it is an important form of early landscape painting.On the surface,it is the work of craftsmen,but it is deeply philosophical.Starting from image analysis and comparison,this article compares landscape paintings under different civilizations to explore the special attributes of Dunhuang landscape paintings.Then,from the perspective of the history of thought,using the method of computer keyword retrieval to conduct in-depth research on the origin and basic ideas of Dunhuang landscape paintings.It reveals that the idea behind the Dunhuang landscape paintings is the dual structure of metaphysics and Chinese Mahayana Buddhism.It is pointed out that Dunhuang landscape paintings,which are very different from the landscape paintings of various civilizations and regions,have unique characteristics in terms of content,form,and style.The reason for this characteristic is the result of the influence of the thinking behind it.Dunhuang landscape paintings originated under the influence of metaphysical spirit,but the main idea that dominates the aura of this special landscape painting is Chinese Buddhist philosophy.The Hinayana Buddhism "name and color" view,Mahayana Buddhism’s Madhyamaka thought and Mahayana ideology are all important basis behind it.Among them,the most important thought that influenced the form of Dunhuang landscape paintings was the Mahayana Buddhism that was introduced to China in the late Wei and Jin Dynasties.
