The Study Of The Brazilian Speech Community’s Language Using Situation In Dongguan

In today’s world,international migration has become a hotspot of the era of globalization.With the continuous enhancement of China’s economic strength,international image and global influence,a large number of foreign immigrants have traveled across oceans to work and settle in China,forming a unique foreign community in China.In-depth investigation of the language use of foreigners in China will be helpful to the harmonious development of the community,the sustainable development of the society,and could provide an objective basis for relevant language services and language policies.This thesis takes Dongguan Brazilians as the research object and the language usage of the Brazilian speech community in Dongguan as the research theme.The survey methods such as questionnaires,interviews,and observation methods were used to collect data to study the language use,language attitudes,language difficulties of Brazilians in Dongguan and related influencing factors,etc.However,affected by the sudden COVID-19 Epidemic in early 2020,the number of Brazilians in Dongguan has been greatly reduced,finally 67 valid questionnaires(46 for adults and 21 for minors)and 7 interview recordings were obtained.This thesis has five chapters.The first chapter introduces the origin,background,theoretical basis,domestic and foreign research summary,methods,process and significance of this research;the second chapter is an analysis of the basic situation of Brazilians in Dongguan,including the research objects,personal information,language ability,language use;the third chapter analysis the language attitudes of Brazilians in Dongguan,including Portuguese,Chinese,English and Dongguan Cantonese,and attempts to explore relevant influencing factors;the forth chapter is Dongguan Brazilians’ language difficulties,which is in the fields of transportation,shopping,dining,medical treatment,community,and analyzes the relationship between the length of life in Dongguan,Chinese ability,English ability and language difficulties;The fifth chapter sorts out the characteristics and existing problems of the Brazilian speech community in Dongguan,and makes suggestions on language services and Chinese learning.The study found that:(1)Most Brazilians in Dongguan are bilingual or multilingual,and the order of self-assessment of language ability is:Portuguese>English>Chinese>Dongguan Cantonese.(2)Portuguese,Chinese,and English have a clear division of labor in the language life of Brazilians in Dongguan.Portuguese is the main communication language at home,English is the main communication language at work,English and Chinese are the main communication language in public,Portuguese and English is the main communication language on the Internet.There is basically no demand for Dongguan Cantonese.(3)Dongguan Brazilians prefer English,Portuguese,Chinese,and have a low evaluation of Dongguan Cantonese.The main factors affecting the language attitude of Dongguan Brazilians are language use,group mentality,the international status of English,Sino-Brazil communication and cooperation.Language ability,gender,age,education level,length of life in Dongguan,the nationality of the spouse has little effect.(4)The Brazilians in Dongguan have a certain degree of language difficulty in different fields,which are ordered from highest priority to lowest: medical treatment,community,shopping,transportation,and dining.The length of life in Dongguan,Chinese and English skills have a strong correlation to the degree of language difficulty of Dongguan Brazilians.
