| The original text of this translation project is selected from the first and second chapters of the book,Thriving in the Gig Economic: Freelancing Online for Tech Professionals and Entrepreneurs.It was published in 2018.The author Adam Sinicki,based on his experience as a programmer,introduces to technical professionals and entrepreneurs how to engage in technical online freelance in the era of the gig economy.The material for this translation project is a popular science text about technology and economy,and the emphasis is on conveying information.The text contains a large number of proper nouns,abbreviations,pronouns and phrases etc.How to use precise and fuzzy thinking to modify and adjust the translation after using machine-assisted translation is the key and difficult point in translation.According to the type and characteristics of the text,Catford’s theory of translation shifts and Halliday and Hassan’s theory of cohesion are chosen as theoretical guidelines.And some translation skills were employed such as converting part of the discourse,amplification and omission as well as translation principles such as transliteration,free translation and cohesion,etc.to secure the translation be faithful and smooth.Through this translation project,the translator has gained the following enlightenment: Firstly,as the English vocabulary evolves to produce new ideas in daily use,translators need to use tools to verify their meaning and correct uses.Secondly,regarding abbreviations of common technical terms,they can be directly transplanted from the source language to the target language.Thirdly,adopting pertinent translation skills to avoid the Europeanization of translation.Finally,the translations obtained with the aid of different machine translations are rich in expression,but still have problems in collocation and semantics,and need to be modified manually. |
