Translation Strategies For Postpositive Attributive In Meteorological Texts From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Introducing Meteorology: A Guide to Weather,written by Jon Shonk,focuses on introducing readers to the basics of meteorological science and providing some basic knowledge of meteorological science for those who are keen to learn more about it.Therefore,some chapters of Introducing Meteorology: A Guide to Weather were translated.At the same time,it will serve as the material for the translation practice of this report to explore the study of some linguistic phenomena in meteorological texts and the translation methods.This translation practice selected the contents of chapter one to chapter six of Introducing Meteorology: A Guide to Weather,which belongs to the category of meteorological texts.The selected text has more meteorological elements and meteorological concepts.It has high linguistic accuracy and strong logicality.The text mostly uses long sentences and many postpositive attributives are used to increase information.In view of this,this report,under the guidance of skopos theory,combines the characteristics of meteorological texts and the linguistic features of meteorological texts to analyze the case studies.This report conducts case studies on four major types of postpositive attributives—adjective phrases,non-finite verbs,prepositional phrases and definite clauses,to explore the strategies and methods of Chinese translation of postpositive attributives.The translation quality of meteorological texts would be improved.And it would provide a better basis for the translation of meteorological texts.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters: chapter one is the introduction of the project,which briefly reviews the contents of the translation materials and the significance of the research of this project;chapter two is the translation process,which briefly describes the pre-preparation,translation practice and the work carried out after the translation of this report;chapter three briefly introduces the three rules of skopos theory and the classification of postpositive attributives;chapter four is a case study,which analyzes the translation strategies and methods of different types of postpositive attributives from the perspective of skopos theory,and it mainly includes preposition,division,amplification,combination and structure conversion;chapter five is the concluding part,which summarized the findings and limitations of this translation practice report,with a view to providing referable help for future researchers.
