On The Female Images In Bai Xianyong’s Works

Bai Xianyong is a unique writer in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese literature.He is called the genius of short stories by Xia Zhiqing.Bai Xianyong is good at shaping female characters and telling women’s stories.Bai Xianyong expresses his concern and deep sympathy for women in his novels.The women in his novels are struggling to tell their own stories under the pressure of time changes and the impermanence of the world.Bai Xianyong not only created a series of classic single female characters,but also constructed a complete female group image system from Harlots to upper class wives in all aspects,vividly showing a picture of all living beings in the society.Although Bai Xianyong is a male writer,he can describe women’s living state and psychological state thoroughly.This article will take "Taipei People" and "Outsiders of new York" as the text,with the method of close reading,starting from the complete system of Bai Xianyong’s female group images,analyze his creative motivation and artistic techniques of shaping the group images,and finally hope to complete the exploration of the literary history value of his female group images.In addition to the introduction,this paper is divided into the following four parts:The first part focuses on the complete system of female group images,which can be roughly divided into three types: Harlots,traditional women and upper class wives,and discusses their connotations.The second part attempts to analyze the creation motivation of female group images from the two aspects of Bai Xianyong’s personal experience and the influence of a dream of Red Mansions on him.The third part,from the two aspects of Bai Xianyong’s portrayal of characters and group images,discusses the artistic characteristics of female group images.The fourth part analyzes the value and status of Bai Xianyong’s female images in the literary history from the perspective of literary history.
