In the history of Chinese literature,“Fu” is the literary genre that can be regarded as the most obscure one.Based on the prosperity of social economy and industry and commerce in the Han Dynasty,“Fu” emerged and became representative of the Han Dynasty literature. That’s also the reason why it is called “Han Fu”.With its flowery rhetoric,“Han Fu”embraces the characteristics of both poetry and prose.Countless scholars and articles are studying Han Fu at all times and in all countries. It is worth mentioning that Han Fu is also an important literary genre for English and American translators and researchers to study and translate classical Chinese literature. In recent years, under the guidance of the “Chinese culture go-out strategy”,the promotion of the breadth and depth of traditional Chinese culture through the translation and dissemination of Chinese classical literature works, classical poetry such as Fu and Ci,have become increasingly popular by scholars from all over the world. The translation and introduction of ancient Chinese poetry(Ci and Fu)by European and American sinologists began approximately in the late 19 th century and the early 20 th century and has a history of 120 years up to now.In the process of “The Spreading of Chinese Poetry”lasting for more than a century,a large number of outstanding western sinologists and scholars have emerged. They have made significant contributions to the translation and research of a study of the Fu of Yang Hsiung. In the 1970 s,based on the hermeneutic theory,George Steiner divides the translation process into four steps: trust, aggression, incorporation, and compensation. His hermeneutic theory on translation provides a new perspective for modern translation studies.Taking hermeneutic theory of Steiner as the theoretical basis, this thesis explores the translation process of the Fu of Yang Hsiung by David R.Knechtges,an American Sinologist, tries to find out the answer on how four steps of hermeneutic theory to be reflected in the translation of the Fu of Yang Hsiung by David R.Knechtges, and summarizes the methods and characteristics to achieve the balance between the original and target text during David R.Knechtges’ translation. The above research and study on the above problems help explore how foreign readers can better accept the ancient Chinese classics. Moreover, the analysis and research on the translation of the Fu of Yang Hsiung can help understand misunderstandings and mistranslations and provide a reference for Future translators, thereby promoting the study of the dissemination and communication of ancient Chinese classics worldwide. Then, centering on the research of the Fu of Yang Hsiung studied by Professor David R.Knechtges, this thesis summarizes his evaluation on Yang Hsiung and discusses the value of Yang Hsiung(a representative of Chinese classical literature)and his works on interactive reference and study at home and abroad. The study of the translation of the Fu of Yang Hsiung is urgentresearch. Its further development is bound to play a positive role in promoting the translation and cultural exchanges between China and the Western world. |
