Canadian contemporary female writer Alice Munro, the 2013 Nobel literature prize winner, who has long focused on short story creation and has a significant influence in the English novel world.Munro’s works mostly focus on female and female’s life, with themes of love,marriage,family,parent-child relationships and so on.Her representative short story collection Runaway attracted wide attention as soon as it was published and won the Giller Prize in that year. This collection contains eight stories that portray the ordinary lives of six female protagonists from different living backgrounds in a small town of Canada, describe their living difficulties and emotional dilemma, and their ambivalence to run away from dilemma. In recent years,Munro’s works have been widely studied by scholars at home and abroad, most of which are analyzed from the perspectives of narrative skills, feminism, thematic content and geographical background, but less attention is paid to the trauma of the characters in this work.Based on the research method of trauma theory, this author sets out to analyze the psychological trauma suffered by the heroines in their growth and life in Runaway, exposes their trauma symptoms, with the focus on the underlying factors which cause psychological trauma beyond the runaway of heroines and explores the the recovery of three protagonists.Findings of this research are as follow: the lack of care in childhood, misfortune in marriage and family, and the restriction of social traditions on female are the main causes of trauma. This author also analyzes the recovery of the heroines from the aspects of reconstruction trauma memory and identity construction. This analysis of Runaway from the perspective of trauma theory provides a different angle for researches on Munro’s works, which not only helps inspire people to pay attention to female psychological trauma and the causes of trauma from literature, but also explores methods for contemporary women to get out of trauma, get rid of difficulties, and regain their self-consciousness,and hope to provide some reference and inspiration for modern people to actively recover trauma.
