Visual Modality Meaning Construction Of Peking Opera:The Jewelry Kylin Purse

As a comprehensive art composed of literature,music,dance,performance,makeup,costumes,stage property and other elements,Peking Opera has the characteristics of multi-modality and multi-symbol system,people can watch it for entertainment,what’s more,the ideological and cultural elements contained in it can exert an educational function.Under the general background of China’s vigorous promotion of “Chinese culture going global” and emphasis on “cultural self-confidence”,it is the responsibility of we students of School of Language and Communication to promote the revival of Peking Opera at home and the spread of Peking Opera abroad.Based on Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar(SFG),Zhang Delu’s the Synthetic Theoretical Framework of Multimodal Discourse Analysis(MDA)and Visual Grammar(VG),a theoretical framework for analyzing Peking Opera is constructed in this research.By using this framework,this research makes an attempt to reconstruct the ideational,interpersonal,textual and cultural meaning on the visual part of the Peking Opera The Jewelry Kylin Purse.The research finds that the costumes and headwear in Peking Opera realized the conceptual representation of the protagonist’s different identities and social status.And the actress’ dance,that is,the body movements and the performers’ group performance,the main action process,realized the narrative representation of the character’s personality,scenes and plot changes.Conceptual representation and narrative representation jointly complete the construction of representational meaning,and create the ideational meaning of the whole opera in function,which presents the audience with the outline of the story to be told in The Jewelry Kylin Purse.In terms of interpersonal meaning,in Peking Opera,the eye contacts form between the actors and actresses and between the actresses and the audiences,offering images and demanding images respectively,completing the construction of the plot and the interaction with the audience.The choice of distance guides the audience to pay particular attention to the appreciation points in the performance of Peking Opera and think deeply about the emotions and thoughts conveyed by the opera.In terms of information value,salience and framing,the position of the actors and actresses in the scene and the placement of props complete the compositional meaning of Peking Opera,thus realizing the multi-modal textual meaning of Peking Opera.At cultural level,the thesis analyzes the Chinese culture presented in this Peking Opera in term of world outlook,outlook on life and values,in order to reduce cultural barriers in the understanding of Peking Opera and promote the effective communication of Peking Opera home and abroad.This study chooses Peking Opera The Jewelry Kylin Purse as the research object and analyze its visual part,in the hope that more Chinese people can correctly understand Chinese Opera,promote Chinese culture and use Chinese Opera to tell Chinese stories to the world.The findings of this research are expected to make contributions to the domestic revival of Peking Opera and its spread abroad.
