| Writing is an important part of English teaching and one of the main forms of language communication.Lexical chunks can help speed up the process of information processing,promote the fluency of language expression,and improve the accuracy of language.Previous studies have shown that teaching with the lexical chunk approach can improve the overall quality of English writing to a certain extent.However,most of the existing studies on chunk theory in english writing are focused on college students,there are few empirical studies on senior high school students.Based on the lexical chunk theory,this study aims to explore the effects of lexical chunk teaching on senior high school studnets’ English writing competence.The specific research questions are as follows:(1)What effect does lexical chunk teaching have on the writing accuracy of senior high school students?(2)What is the correlation between the number and type of lexical chunks used by senior high school students and their writing scores?In response to the research questions,a 16-weeks experiment was conducted.The study subjects were 96 students in two classes of a senior high school,among which 49 were in the experimental group and 47 were in the control group.The experimental group used the lexical chunk approach,while the control group used the conventional method.At the end of the experiment,the number and type of multi-word chunks,phrase building chunks and sentence building chunks in the writing samples of the experimental group and control group were measured,and SPSS23.0 was employed to compare the differences between the two groups.Finally,the effects of chunk teaching on senior high school students’ English writing competence are summarized based on the data,and analyzed theoretically according to input hypothesis,output hypothesis and information processing theory.It was found that lexical chunk teaching can significantly improve the writing accuracy of senior high school students.The data showed that there was a significant difference in the number of error-free T units between the experimental group and the control group.Chunk teaching can effectively improve the English writing scores of senior high school students.At the same time,students in the experimental group used more number and type of word chunks in writing.The students tended to use multi-word chunks,followed by phrase chunks,and at least habitual chunks.The research shows that lexical chunk teaching can improve the accuracy of English writing,develop the ability of text organization,and enhance senior high school students’ English writing competence. |
