In "Martin Eden",Jack London portrays a personal struggler who pursues his "ideal self"-Martin Eden.In this process,he realized the change of identity, that is,from sailor to writer, but he was in a state of loneliness due to the inconsistency of his identity, showing the image of a lonely person.Behind this image of a lonely person reflects the change of author Jack London’s attitude towards the "American Dream",that is,the change from recognition to doubt to reflection. At the same time, this lonely image also reflects part of Jack London’s own status. Therefore, this article intends to use identity theory on the basis of close reading of the text to analyze the specific manifestations and deep implications of Martin Eden, the lonely image, from three aspects: social identity, cultural identity and self-identity.The first chapter focuses on the interpretation of Martin Eden’s social identity in the context of the "American Dream".At this time Martin’s willingness to change his identity reflects his recognition of the "American Dream".The recognition attitude, while the rejection of outside groups has shaped Martin’s lonely image;Chapter 2 focuses on the analysis of Martin Eden’s cultural identity,at this time Martin has experienced a process of identity transformation;Chapter 3 focuses on the analysis of Martin ·Eden’s self-identification.At this time,Martin realized the change of identity, recognized the illusion of the "American Dream" and reflected on it.He fell into an insoluble loneliness and ended in tragedy, reflecting the author Jack London Criticism of the culture at that time;Chapter Four combines the background of the times and the author’s own experience of Jack London to analyze the causes of Martin’s image of the lonely, and further cultural reflection.
