The Writing Of Liberal Theology In Marilyn Robinson’s "Gilead" Series Novels

Marilynne Robinson is a famous contemporary American novelist,who has won a Pulitzer prize and national book reviewers award prize in American literature.The process of the classicization of her novels reflects the value orientation of contemporary American literary criticism."Gilead" series of novels called for the return of the traditional culture,which has great influence on contemporary American culture.As a devout American Protestant,Robinson’s liberal theology is reflected in both her prose and fiction.At present,there is no lack of research on Robinson from the Angle of religion in China,but there is no research from the Angle of liberal theology.Jack is a new sequel of the "Gilead" series,published by Robinson in September 2020.There is no translation published in China,nor the study of the whole "Gilead" series.This paper takes gilead novels as the object of analysis,combining with the relevant content of liberal theology and the social and historical background for text analysis,to explore the "gilead" series of the novel’s liberal theology connotation.Through the The accept and influence of gilead novels in America,we can understand the religious tradition of the United States and its significance to American culture,increase a reference point for understanding contemporary American culture.The introduction of this paper includes the main plot introduction of the "Gilead" series of novels,marilynne Robinson’s liberal theological concept and the research results of Robinson’s novels,as well as the research method and significance of this paper.The text is divided into three chapters,which respectively analyze how Robinson wrote his liberal theology through the novels from three aspects of the theme,characters and narrative strategy of "Gilead" series.The first chapter,starting from the theme of the novel,discusses the connection between the family and country theme of "Gilead" series and the sociality of Robinson’s liberal theology.This paper argues that the choice of family and country theme of "Gilead" series reflects the sociality of liberal theology.The second chapter focuses on the character image analysis,discusses the relationship between the character images of "Gilead" series and Robinson’s liberal theological practice.While analyzing the characteristics of the main character images of "Gilead" series,it explores how Robinson created the character images of different identities,different genders and different races.The assumption of using liberal theology to solve social problems is put into practice.The third chapter discusses the narrative strategy of "gilead" series of novels with Robinson liberal theology of the relationship between the experiential,based on the analysis of "gilead" series of narrative style and characteristics,on the basis of exploring liberal theology based on the experience of how to influence the narrative strategy of Robinson,and achieve the ultimate goal of moral education.On the basis of summarizing the main points of the text,the conclusion analyzes and anticipates the significance of Robinson’s liberal theological concept in the new era.This thesis uses the interdisciplinary research method of combining literature with theology and history to study the ideological connotation of Robinson’s novels from the perspectives of religion,society,history and culture.In the form of novels,this paper analyzes the narrative techniques and styles of gilead series by using the theories of character image analysis,narratology and space theory.
