Translation Strategies For Untranslated And Inconsistently Translated Concepts In Men’s Studies ——A Case Study Of The New Politics Of Fatherhood

Originated from Western gender studies,men’s study is a relatively new discipline in China.Translating its findings could enhance the public understanding of it and motivate the public to ponder over family responsibilities,child-rearing,and fatherhood.However,some untranslated or inconsistently translated concepts in this field caused obstacles in public understanding.This translation practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the first and second chapter of The New Politics of Fatherhood:Men’s Movements and Masculinities（hereinafter referred to as The NPF）by Ana Jordan in 2019,and aims to find translation strategies and accurate translations for these concepts.These concepts in The NPF are divided into four categories:concepts about men/fatherhood/masculinities,about gender,about feminism,and about gender movements.The author referred to the norms and translation strategies of Andrew Chesterman in translation,and decided whether to break away from the expectancy norm of the lexical choice of existing translations based on whether those inconsistent translations are accurate and readable enough,and how they are systematic with the translation of sibling concepts.The author also treated different types of untranslated concepts with different strategies and found that concepts about men/fatherhood/masculinity could be translated referencing literal translation,cohesion change,and explicitness change.Concepts about gender could be translated adopting unit shift and trope change.Concepts about feminism could be translated applying literal translation,and concepts about gender movements could be translated using literal translation and loan/calque with integration with visibility change.In addition,when literal translation is adopted,the translation of concepts about men/fatherhood/masculinities should also consider constructing a system among the translations of untranslated concepts,and the translation of concepts about feminism should be systematic with that of their sibling concepts that have established translations.
