Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the great Russian "melodist",created many music works of various themes in his life, inheriting the achievements of Russian music since Glinka. With a combination of Russian folk music with Western European compositional techniques, his works are rich and complex in emotional connotation, remaining a precious musical treasure for Russia as well as the world.Tchaikovsky’s romances are highly lyrical, delicate, poetic and romantic, with high demands on the choice of lyrics, which must be rich in connotation and poetic in rhythm, expressing emotions in a beautiful context. This paper will deeply analyze the reasons for the formation of "tragic" factors in Tchaikovsky’s works, and sort out the artistic characteristics of the three creative periods;then sum up the "ethnicity","lyricism" and "tragedy" of Tchaikovsky’s romances from an aesthetic perspective.Taking two representative works as examples, this paper will analyze the connotation, musical structure and singing characteristics of the lyrics, highlighting the "beauty of mood"produced from the combination of words and melody and the "tragic beauty" flowing from the emotions. An in-depth study of the development and the aesthetic characteristics of the romances will help better understand the creative intent and the expression of emotions. The thesis consists of three parts. The first part expounds the formation of tragedy and the development of romances in Tchaikovsky’s works. The second part expounds the aesthetic characteristics of Tchaikovsky’s romantics; The third part is an analysis of Tchaikovsky’s romantic pieces "Farewell Letter,Dear Friend" and "I am like a Little Blade of Grass in the Meadow".With a detailed analysis of the lyric connotations, the structures, the melodic features and singing requirements,it emphasizes emotional processing and musical styles. The last part is the conclusion.Based on the author’s comprehension while singing the romances and the previous studies, this paper summarizes the artistic value and characteristics of Tchaikovsky romantics. The part further studies the aesthetic characteristics and singing of Tchaikovsky’s romances so as to better deal with the emotions in singing.
