With the advent of the picture-reading era,more and more visual components are integrated into English teaching in Senior High Schools.This means that the country has put forward higher requirements for the cultivation of students’ visual literacy.Teachers’ understanding of visual literacy,attitudes towards cultivating visual literacy,and the effects of cultivating visual literacy in the teaching process are all directly related to students’ visual literacy acquisition,which is also an urgent problem for us to investigate.Therefore,this study explores the cultivation of students’ visual literacy in the English classes of the Senior High School.In order to achieve this goal,the author puts forward the following research questions:(1)What are the teachers’ understanding and teaching attitudes of and towards visual literacy?(2)What is the current situation of teachers’ cultivation of students’ visual literacy?(3)What are the effects of the cultivation of students’ visual literacy?Through the questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation,firstly,the author discovers that English teachers lack a theoretical understanding of visual literacy.However,they hold a positive attitude towards cultivating students’ visual literacy in English teaching.Secondly,there is an imbalance in the cultivation of visual thinking,visual learning and visual communication abilities.Teachers devote the greatest time to developing pupils’ visual communication skills,which are followed by visual thinking skills.They devote the least amount of time to improving students’ visual learning abilities.Finally,interviews and classroom observations reveal that cultivating students’ visual literacy has numerous positive effects on high school English classes.First,by cultivating students’ visual thinking abilities,they will be able to deal with material according to the mind map,increasing the efficiency of their information processing.Second,developing students’ visual learning abilities can help them improve their judgment,observance,and memory ability.Third,teachers can penetrate emotional education and help students better understand the topic by fostering students’ visual communication abilities.In addition,the author puts forward some suggestions to enlighten English teachers and promote the growth of students’ visual literacy.
