Abstract/Summary:
Complexity, accuracy and fluency are important dimensions to measure learners’ language output, which is influenced by many factors. In recent years, writing teaching and writing research have been paid more and more attention.By analyzing the influence of style on the writing of Chinese second language(L2)learners,it can better guide the teaching of writing and promote the improvement of the writing ability of the learners. At present, the research on writing output based on style mainly focuses on the field of English L2.There is still a great space for the study of the stylistic effects of complexity, accuracy and fluency of L2 writing output. This paper mainly studies the influence of style on the complexity and accuracy of writing in Chinese L2 learners.Firstly, the measurement indexes of complexity and accuracy are defined from two levels. The measurement indexes of vocabulary complexity are Vocabulary Diversity and Vocabulary Difficulty, which supplemented by the proportion of vocabulary usage of different grades; The measurement index of vocabulary accuracy is Vocabulary Accuracy. The measurement index of syntax complexity is T-unit average length, and the measurement index of syntax accuracy is the percentage of error free T-unit.Based on the HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University, the Chinese L2 learners are divided into 60 points,75 points and 90 points, and the random sampling method is used to extract 10 essays of different styles, including Practical writing,Narrative writing of humanity,Narrative writing of narration and Argumentative writing, with a total of 120 essays. Then, the style type and language level are defined as independent variables, and Descriptive statistics,One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test are used to analyze the quantitative data by IBM SPSS Statistics 22,which aims to clarify the complexity and accuracy of different writing styles of Chinese L2 learners and the development of the accuracy and complexity of different writing styles.Through the horizontal research,it is found that the difficulties of vocabulary and syntax of Argumentative writing are significantly higher than that of Narrative writing of humanity,Narrative writing of narration and Practical writing. The difficulties of vocabulary and syntax of Practical writing are significantly lower than other three type of essay, but its syntactic accuracies are significantly higher than others. There is no significant difference in accuracy and complexity of Narrative writing.Meanwhile, there is no significant stylistic difference between vocabulary diversity and accuracy. Therefore,it shows that style has a great influence on the complexity and accuracy of Chinese L2 learners’ writing. The results analyzed by longitudinal study show that the complexity and accuracy of each index are developing significantly except for syntactic complexity. However, the development of complexity and accuracy is unbalanced. The accuracy of low-level to medium-level stage develops faster than the medium level to high level, but the complexity develops more slowly. The development trends of complexity and accuracy of different writing styles are consistent and positively related to the language level with different development track. Moreover, different styles show different development tracks. Therefore,it shows that style has a great influence on the development of complexity and accuracy of writing.Based on the above research results, this paper puts forward some suggestions on the compilation of textbooks, teaching and evaluation of Chinese L2 writing.
