Sage is the highest ideal personality that Confucianism has admired for thousands of years.Different times and classes have shaped different sages, but they all regard the saint as the highest goal of personal achievement.Ma Yifu,as a Confucianist, devoted his whole life to reviving sacred learning and carrying forward Chinese traditional Confucian culture. He often mentioned sages in the process of interpreting Confucian classics.Based on his attainments of Confucianism and Buddhism,he not only inherited the sages’ thoughts of Confucian philosophers, but also boldly used Buddhist thoughts to elaborate on sages in the process of discussing sages, which made his view of sages quite distinctive. The emergence of thought is related to a certain social background, and the development of thought has a certain inheritance. To this end, this paper discusses the reasons for the formation of Ma Yifu’s view of sages from three aspects: social background, ideological origin and reflection on western learning. The country was in turmoil at the time, prompting a wave of patriots to seek a national solution. To find the way out of the country is nothing more than two things: one is the device, the other is the way,and the article focuses on the way.The ideological origin is analyzed from Ma Yifu’s academic history, including the inheritance of Confucian culture and the study of Buddhism and Taoism. As a Confucian scholar,Ma Yifu basically followed the Confucian view of saints in the construction of saints. In the nature of the mind, whatever is holy is the same.Ma Yifu replaces the essence of mind with the self-nature and virtue,on the one hand, emphasizing the intrinsic nature of the essence of mind,on the other hand, emphasizing the morality and practice of the essence of mind.On the question of virtue and position, the sage is double in virtue and position.Virtue comes from heaven and lives in ourselves. He infuses the element of virtue into position, thinks that virtue is called, emphasizes the priority and determination of virtue, and expounds that sage’s virtue is double with the two truths of truth and vulgarity. In addition, from the perspective of self-consciousness,awareness of him and horn man,it is explained that saints are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. With the same nature and body, people can be holy, but without practice, they cannot be holy. The work of sanctification should begin with the determination. The determination of the determination is like a compass in the voyage, guiding the way forward.Ambition established, but also need to repair respect, published habits,in order to seek its rest assured. At the same time,we should read books, especially the Six Arts, because reading helps us to realize our innate virtue. And reading when from " the book of Song" and into, with " the book of Song" first, because " the book of Song" can body benevolence.Time is done, the sage in appearance is shown as smart and wise phase, quality is shown as selfless,no desire,to achieve the realm of all things in heaven and earth, reflects a heart of the feelings of the world.Sages are interested in learning, and Ma Yifu’s advocacy of the theory of Six Arts aims to return people to moral cultivation,so that people can establish themselves, because establishment is the foundation of the country. At the same time, the different attitudes towards western learning of the three "new Confucian scholars" mean that they are different in the construction and connotation of sages.Compared with Liang Shuming and Xiong Shili,Ma Yifu’s view of saints is more traditional.
