A Critical Discourse Study Of The Construction Of Huawei’s Corporate Image In Chinese And American Newspapers

Abstract/Summary:
For the sake of studying the image of Chinese enterprises at home and abroad,this thesis selects Huawei,a technology giant in China,as the research object.This thesis is based on the two corpora,namely Corpus of Chinese News on Huawei(CCNH)and Corpus of American News on Huawei(CANH).From the perspective of CDA,with the aid of Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework in text analysis and corpus analysis methods,this study aims to explore Huawei’s corporate image constructed in Chinese and American newspapers.In the description level,high frequency words,collocation and concordance are employed to dig out the linguistic features of Huawei’s corporate image;In the interpretation level,reported modes and news sources are studied to probe into news production in Chinese and American newspapers on the construction of Huawei’s corporate image;In explanation level,the ideology behind the Huawei’s corporate image constructed in Chinese and American newspapers is revealed from political and economic point of view.The research has the following findings.First of all,in the text level,through analyzing the high frequency words in two self-built corpora,Huawei’s corporate image concerned in Chinese and American newspapers includes three constituents,that is technology,product and social responsibility,among which the technological image is the most noticeable;by an analysis on the collocation and semantic prosody,the differences of Huawei’s technological image constructed in Chinese and American newspapers are mainly reflected in five aspects:technological position,innovation,contribution,collaboration as well as security.Secondly,in the level of discourse practice,when constructing Huawei’s technological image,Chinese newspapers are prone to using direct speeches while American newspapers tend to employ indirect speeches;At the same time,the news sources of quotations in Chinese newspapers are mainly from the personal representatives of Huawei while those in American newspapers are from official government.The differences in news production in Chinese and American newspapers reflect their respective ideologies.Thirdly,in the level of social practice,when constructing Huawei’s technological image,the two newspapers both serve their national interests.Chinese newspapers generally present the idea of “mutual benefit and win for all”while American newspapers are based on the American argument for “China threat”.Discourse plays an important role in the process of corporate image dissemination.To some extent,this paper proves that applying the Critical Discourse Analysis approach into the corporate image study is feasible and to some extent it also provides reference for the dissemination of Chinese corporate image in overseas countries.
