With its distinctive characters and surrealistic features,Xi You Ji has attracted a large reading public overseas and promoted the dissemination of Chinese culture in other countries.Chapter titles are an essential part of the Chinese Chapter novel,so are the chapter titles of Xi You Ji.However, translating the chapter titles is difficult due to their linguistic features, cultural connotations, and communicative intentions in the source text environment. Therefore,a comparative study of the translation of chapter titles by W.J.F.Jenner and Anthony C.Yu has been made in this thesis from the perspective of translators’ responsibilities. In Eco-translatology,Professor Hu Gengshen put forward four translation ethical principles: the principle of “Balance and Harmony”,“Multi-Dimensional Integration”,“Multiple Symbiosis” and “Translators’ Responsibility”.The principle of “translators’ responsibilities” is of necessity to follow in that translators have “full responsibility” to coordinate the relations between the translation environment, translated text, and translation community under the framework of Eco-translatology.Thus,attempts have been made in this thesis to further concretize the translators’ responsibility in the textual ecology.Based on a comparative analysis of the two full versions of Xi You Ji,the fulfillment of translators’ responsibility in linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions will be explored too.In conclusion, this thesis holds that the understanding of translators’ responsibility within Eco-translatology should be based on eco-holism.The practice of translators’ responsibility lies in whether or not translators realize the balance between the source and the target ecologies. The evaluation of the fulfillment of translators’ responsibility at the textual level is related to the holistic awareness of eco-balance reflected in the translation.
