| As globalization is advancing and cross-cultural communication is growing,more and more researchers and educators highlight the importance of cultural awareness training.The English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High School(2017)points out the significance to develop students’ core competencies.It also puts forward the goal of cultivating students’ cultural awareness in English teaching.As the most effective medium for the input of cultural content,teaching materials play an important role in English learning.Based on the classification of cultural regions and Byram’s cultural classification list,this paper will analyze the cultural content in English Textbooks(FLTRP published in 2019),and provide corresponding suggestions for the teachers and editors.The main questions of this study are:(1)What are the distribution and proportion of the cultural content involved in textbooks?(2)How is different cultural content presented in the teaching materials?(3)What are the cultural themes of different cultural content in textbooks?Here are the major findings:(1)The distribution of cultural content is uneven,among which other culture and target cultural account for a large ratio.And the quantity of each regional culture in each volume also changes unreasonably.(2)The presentation of cultural content is of variety,most of which is presented with the combination of pictures and text.(3)The cultural themes are abundant,covering all the eight themes.However,there are big gaps in the amount of each theme,and some indepth items are not mentioned in textbooks.Combined with the research results,the following suggestions will be put forward for teachers and textbook editors: Teachers would make full use of advanced teaching resources to expand cultural themes in class.For the missing content in textbooks,teachers could employ rich and colorful extracurricular activities.Besides,some trainings can be employed to strengthen teachers’ cultural literacy.In addition,the English textbook editors should balance the proportion of various cultural content in textbooks from the perspective of students’ development.What’ more,the content about etiquette,laws and regulations,etc.needs to be added. |
