With the development of human material civilization,spiritual civilization is constantly created and promoted.The emergence of photography in the 19 th century shook the representation-oriented painting styles such as classicism and impressionism,while abstract painting,which sought to express the spirit of expression,began to rise,sett off a wave of abstraction around the world.A large number of abstract painters and theorists devoted much effort to the theme of abstract art.Abstract art,a new painting concept,was gradually accepted by the world,and eventually occupied an irreplaceable position in the art history of the 20 th century.Abstract elements,as the concrete expression form of abstract painting,are freely combined in various styles in painting,and artists constantly create novel visual forms,which add infinite possibilities for painting.William Scott,a British artist in the 20 th century,was one of the most unique artists in the European painting world at that time.There are a lot of abstract elements in his work,taking the most common kitchen still life as the theme.He extracted point,line,surface,color and other abstract elements from some concrete and simple things to form overlapping Spaces and add simple colors.It embodies his pure and simple artistic spirit.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,Including research background research methods and current situation at home and abroad.The second chapter firstly introduces the concept of abstract and abstract painting and explores the concrete expression form of abstract elements in the painting.The third chapter tells the art life of Scott and explores the formation process of Scott’s works by stages.The fourth chapter,taking Scott’s works as an example,presents William Scott’s understanding of abstract elements,analyzes the presentation of abstract elements in William Scott’s paintings,and the expression of William Scott’s artistic spirit.The last chapter discusses the influence of Scott on the author’s creation,analyzes how the author uses abstract elements to express his understanding of painting,and how to add the author’s understanding to his creation,to expand the language of painting individually.
