Guided by Katharina Reiss’ s text typology and taking the E-C translation of Viruses,Plagues, and History: Past,Present, and Future(excerpts)as a case study, the thesis analyzes the textual characteristics and types of popular science texts, and further discussing their translation principles and methods.According to text typology, popular science texts are informative,in the first place, because they contain many objective facts, cases and data, and are written in a logical and objective manner.Meanwhile, popular science texts are also operative, which means that they need to convey information in easy-to-understand language so as to spread knowledge to readers and create appellative effects on them.In terms of the informative function, the paper holds that the translation of this kind of text should take both scientificity and popularization into account, thereby proposing the translation principles: first, fully transmit the information of the source text;second, present the translation in a form familiar to the target language readers.Based on the above principles, the specific methods of translating informative texts are discussed from the perspective of terminology, complex sentences, and discourse coherence to ensure accurate transmission of the information. In terms of the operative function, the paper puts forth the translation principle as follows: adopting a reader-oriented approach that reproduces the appellative effects of the source texts. Then, based on the features of the source text, the thesis explores the appropriate methods of translating operative texts, from the perspective of news, letters and illustrations,to reproduce the appellative effects of the source text. Therefore,Reiss’ s text typology is a good guide for the translation of popular science texts in that it can help translators analyze textual features, classify textual types and determine translation principles as well as methods.
