Guided by Peter Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation theory, this thesis discusses translation standard and methods for realistic novels based on the E-C translation of some excerpts from a war-related novel A Passage North. This thesis analyzes the text through specific cases from the perspectives of vocabulary, sentences and cohesion of text, and comes out with some translation methods thereafter.Specifically, according to semantic translation theory, the translation should add annotations to explain those cultural and military terms for a better understanding on readers' part if necessary. Some linguistic structures of English should be reserved to restore the writer's thread of thinking and writing purpose.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,an ideal reading experience similar to that of the source language readers should be created for target language readers. Therefore, this thesis adopts some translation methods like amplification, omission, reconstruction and so on to achieve this goal.Besides,to achieve cohesion of the text, dashes should be rearranged during translation following the textual features of Chinese, and last but not least, pronouns can be used to avoid redundancy.
